SMSC and British Values
At Winterslow, it is the responsibility of everyone in the school community to ensure our children are knowledgeable global citizens who have the power to sparkle as change makers of the future.
SMSC
SMSC stands for Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural development. Ofsted describes it as ‘…the training of good human beings, purposeful and wise, themselves with a vision of what it is to be human and the kind of society that makes that possible’.
SPIRITUAL DEVELOPMENT refers to the acquiring of beliefs, values and behaviours that relate to the emotional aspects of being a human, such as feelings and emotions. Some examples in practice are: PSHE curriculum and Thoughtful Thursday Worships, Well-Being Weeks, Friday Sparkle time, our Enrichment offer, Culture and Spirituality days, The Bridge project, Superstar Friday Worships and more.
MORAL DEVELOPMENT involves exploring, understanding and recognising shared values, as well as developing the ethical frameworks that underpin these values. Some examples in practice are: Anti-bullying week, Online Safety curriculum, Digital Days and PCSO workshops, whole school behaviour approach, Pupil leadership roles and more.
SOCIAL DEVELOPMENT involves learners working effectively together and participating successfully in the community as a whole. Some examples are: Whole school enrichment opportunities, trips and visitors, pupil conferencing, pupil tours and leadership groups and more.
CULTURAL DEVELOPMENT generally refers to developing an understanding of one’s own culture and of other cultures locally, regionally, nationally and internationally. Some examples are: Inter-School Competitions, Schools visits and visitors, Aspirations Day, Living Museum events, digital experiences and talks, residential visits, Rocketship bookshop visit, Young Voices Choir trip and more.
British Values
The Department for Education states that there is a need: To create and enforce a clear and rigorous expectation on all schools to promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.”
As a distinctively Christian school, our Christian values synchronise with the teaching of British Values with a core vision of giving children the skills and attributes to contribute positively to modern Britain.
