Medical and First Aid

Bumped Head Protocol

If a child has a bump to their head at school, they will be given first aid which will include a cold compress, and the parent/carer will be contacted by phone. They will either be called to be notified that a bump has occurred and that the child has been given a 'bumped head' wrist band to wear  or to tell them that they need to come and collect the child because the school first-aider feels that the bump is serious and further medical care might be required (e.g. a visit to the doctor or local A&E).

Please follow this guidance if you have any concerns

Most children who have minor bangs on the head have no problems afterwards. However in some instances, symptoms of a concussion might happen right after the head injury or develop over hours or even days or weeks after. They can include:

  •      headache
  •      confusion
  •      dizziness
  •      vision changes
  •      nausea and/or vomiting
  •      trouble walking and talking
  •      not remembering the injury
  •      not remembering before/after the injury
  •      feeling sluggish

Someone with a concussion also might have focus or learning problems, sleep problems, anxiety, or sadness. Should you see any of the signs listed above take them to see a GP or to the Accident & Emergency Department /Minor Injuries Unit at your local hospital.

Please visit the NHS website for more information.

Medicines in School

At Winterslow, we are committed to supporting pupils with medical conditions.  The administration of medicines is a service that Winterslow Primary School is not obliged to undertake, so we ask that parents/carers comply with the following guidance.

  • Parents/carers must complete the Parental Agreement for School to Administer Medicine Form.  This form can be found via the link below (can be printed and completed) or paper copies are available from the school office.  We will not administer any medication without a signed Agreement.

  • All requests to administer medication must be directed to the school office and all medicines must be handed to the school office and not class teachers;

  • We will not accept verbal consents (unless in extreme emergencies at the discretion of the Headteacher) or written consent in the form of notes;

Prescribed Medicines

  • Prescribed medicines are those that have been prescribed by a doctor, dentist or other healthcare professional.  They must be in the original container as dispensed by a pharmacist and include the prescriber’s instructions for administration;

  • We will not accept medicines that are not in their original container;

  • Loose blister packs of medication, or tablets in temporary containers will not be accepted.

Non-Prescribed Medicines

  • The school will administer non prescribed medication such as children’s paracetamol, allergy relief syrup, travel sickness tablets, lip salve etc. only if this Agreement is completed by a parent/carer.Administration of medication form
